Day 4, 5 and 6 Guwahati and Kaziranaga

We left early in the morning from Shillong to Guwahati. The shared taxi will charge Rs 150 per person from Police Bazaar Shillong to Paltan Bazaar Guwahati. However you need to be a smart bargainer here as well. Look for the taxis with Assam number and try to fix a deal for an independent reserved taxi for about Rs 500. 

On the way you can hop at many amazing places with dense pine forests, bamboo forests and lakes. Bhargava INN located in Paltan bazaar is a very good option for Budget travelers. The rooms are very economical and well maintained. I also stayed for a night at Maitri Hotel where the rooms were very good and affordable but mosquitoes troubled the whole night here.

Hotel Mayur in Guwahati has very economical AC rooms ranging from Rs 900 and non AC at Rs 500. But according to me the rooms above Rs 1500 are much better and recommended in this hotel. However one of the best options for lunch and dinner is Govind’s Restaurant located adjacent to Hotel Mayur. I am not sure whether it is part of Hotel mayur or not. We really relished the food here and no other restaurants food is comparable or even at par with Govind’s restaurant in Mayur Hotel.

Independent Reserved Taxis will cost you too much. If you are a budget traveler like me then either you need to get a good bargain for the independent taxi or you have an excellent option of going for a site seeing in conducted tours.

Here I would like to mention the name of one Taxi owner cum driver who operates from Paltan Bazaar Guwahati. His name is Muzzaffar and phone number is 09854514486. I spoke to many drivers in the area and finally found this guy very genuine and honest. He not only served as a driver to us but he served as a guide too on his own. This poor guy even doesn’t know my name and if you phone him without any reference he would definitely be of help.

Assam Tourism department offers several well planned tour packages to places in and around Guwahati and to other tourist destinations like Kaziranga National Park, Shillong, etc.
