Kalawati a widow of a farmer who had committed suicide had suddenly come to the limelight in 2008 when Congress President Rahul Gandhi after meeting her at her house raised the issues of farmer suicides in the parliament. While addressing he specifically mentioned Kalawati’s name

Many NGOs and the then Governments offered her help after 2008

Kalawati, lives in Jalka village of Vidarbha, Maharashtra, her husband a farmer had committed suicide several years ago.

Nobody knows how Kalawati is living now. What is her economical status? However news reports pour in at frequent intervals about Kalawati and her family’s struggle with life. She is taking care of a big family comprising her children and grand children.

She became a household name in Maharashtra, but in 2010 her son-in-law could not bear the debt burden and committed suicide. One of her daughters also died later in the same year

Due to poverty another daughter also attempted suicide but was saved by the villagers

There are millions of Kalawati’s in India and the governments should be serious in uplifting their economics and social status
